Live@edu is a hosted service provided by Microsoft to educational institutions to provide students with a enterprise class email and calendaring service, along with contacts and access to Office Web Apps. What is my Windows LiveID?

Your Windows LiveID is the same format as your student email address (StudentID@student.swin.edu.au). Essentially your Windows LiveID is the username you use to access all the services offered by Live@edu.

Instead of entering into individual contractual agreements with Microsoft for the use of Live@edu, students are bound by Swinburne Universities existing policies and procedures. To access these policies see the IT Policies and Procedures page. To access other Windows Live Services not provided as part of Live@edu you may be required to accept the Microsoft Terms of Use for those specific services.

General Use Questions

Can I access my mail from a POP or IMAP mail client or from my mobile device

For security reasons, whilst on Campus and connected to a shared classroom computer you can only access your mail via the Outlook Web App. When you are connecting with your own computer or mobile device via the University wireless network or from outside the Swinburne network, you can access your mail using POP and IMAP clients by using the mail settings outlined at: http://live.swinburne.edu.au/mailsettings.html.

I cannot change my online status, it's all greyed out. How do I get my status working?

This is tied into Instant Messenger and requires that you accept the Windows Live Service Agreement. You can do this by following the instructions at http://live.swinburne.edu.au/activate.html.

Is my mail backed up?

No! Traditional backups are not performed on Outlook Live mailboxes. Instead, Outlook Live uses highly available mailboxes and servers to ensure your mail is not lost as a result of hardware failure or other disaster. ITS recommends that you make your own backups by exporting your mail to a pst file.

What if I accidentally delete an email, can I get it back?

Items that you delete go into the Deleted Items folder where they can be recovered if necessary. Items will stay in the Deleted Items folder until you manually clean them out. Once emptied from the Deleted Items folder you can recover them for up to month, after which the item is permanently deleted and cannot be recovered. For details on how to recover deleted items see http://live.swinburne.edu.au/undelete.html.

You mentioned I can download Microsoft professional tools without charge - Where can I get them?

Yes, as of our last check there were around 14 Developer Tools, 1 Designer Tool, 5 Server Products and 2 Application Products available. You can get them from Microsoft's DreamSpark website at https://www.dreamspark.com/default.aspx.

Where can I get help about Outlook Live or the other Live@edu services?
